Artist Statement

I seek to show the world around me through a monocle of whimsy, with glasses both fey and familiar. Within all my work, I pursue layers of intrigue with each line. I play with light and texture, scumbling it across the canvas to make caves. I invite the viewer to take a closer look into what lies within these nooks and crannies to find a trinket trove of fantasy. In a world crafted from everyday life, creatures and curiosity are made from every splatter, droplet, swipe and stroke. I chase the light captured within a photograph, illuminating the canvas from the inside out. Using oil paint as my medium, whether on canvas or board, I use my brushes to reveal the personal world trapped inside my head.

In my work I invite the viewers to conjure their own story as they travel over layers of paint. The colors of light are not simply chosen; they are born on a canvas through pain and ecstasy. Within my paintings, there is a mysticism in the mundanity of life around us which I seek to explore. Paint can only capture the fleeting moments of this existence, but it is elevated above simple photos due to its tactile nature. Therefore, I chase moments of existence where the veil of humanity is thinned, so one can peer into a world parallel to our own but unfamiliar. Whether in dimly lit shadows, the overgrowth of a forest, or the simple stillness of a homemade altar, life deserves to be fantastical and fascinating. All I wish to capture in my paintings is a hint of this fantasy for others to indulge in.
